Overview
Elsewhere Residency – Miami Goes Elsewhere Intra-City Fellowship
Elsewhere Museum, Greensboro, NC
The Elsewhere Museum presents Miami Artist in Residence Juana Valdes' installation and performance piece, "Those The Sun Has Loved." During the ongoing building renovations that took place as the residency unfolded, Valdes used this transitional moment to document the site and conduct a series of interviews with all the construction workers, staff, artists, participants, and local neighbors, thereby archiving this pivotal moment in Elsewhere’s history. Artists and neighbors were invited to join the artist at Elsewhere to sew the photos and stars onto the final cloth banner on First Friday, August 5, 2016.
Juana Valdes was selected as one of six artists for the 2016 Miami Goes Elsewhere Intra-City Fellowship, a special month-long residency at Elsewhere—a living museum and residency program set inside a former thrift store. Taking place from June 8 to July 6, 2016, the residency served as an incubator for collaborative, experimental, and critically engaged practices that explored Miami’s ecology of creative practitioners.
Fellows received a $1,000 honorarium, travel support, room and board, and access to Elsewhere’s expansive material surplus. Residents were integrated into Elsewhere’s global network of artists, curators, and cultural professionals, while participating in a dynamic schedule of public programs.
Despite ongoing building renovations during the residency, the program offered a flexible, adaptive environment, encouraging artists to create amidst transformation and impermanence. Valdes used the renovation of the site to carry out a series of interviews with all the construction worker, staff, artists, participants and local neighbors to archive this transition moment of Elsewhere’s history.
